In an outstanding cultural exchange, a group of 80 contest winners from Dubai's Radio 4 experienced an unforgettable 5-day adventure in Latvia. The group, a diverse mix of eager travelers, were treated to a comprehensive tour of Latvia’s most iconic landmarks and hidden gems.

Day 1: Riga Old Town Exploration

The group kicked off their Latvian adventure with a captivating tour of Riga’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its medieval architecture and vibrant history. As they wandered through the cobblestone streets, the visitors marveled at the Gothic spires of St. Peter’s Church, the grandeur of the House of the Blackheads, and the intricate details of the Three Brothers’ buildings. The tour highlighted the city’s rich cultural tapestry and historical significance. This engaging introduction to Riga set the perfect tone for the memorable experiences that followed.

Day 2: Rundale Castle & Zelt Sea Buckthorn farm

The group began their journey with a visit to Rundale Palace, an architectural masterpiece of Baroque and Rococo art. The stunning interiors and beautifully landscaped gardens provided a glimpse into Latvia’s aristocratic past. Lunch at the charming Ozollade Restaurant, located within the castle grounds, allowed the visitors to savor local cuisine while enjoying the palace’s grandeur.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Zelt Sea Buckthorn farm, a delightful and educational stop that showcased Latvia’s agricultural richness. Nestled in the countryside, the farm is renowned for its cultivation of sea buckthorn, a berry known for its exceptional health benefits. The visitors enjoyed a guided tour of the farm, learning about the sustainable farming practices and the various uses of sea buckthorn in products ranging from juices to skincare. They also had the opportunity to taste a drink and desert made out of sea buckthorn berries. .

Day 3: Jurmala

The group’s visit to the Jurmala Open Air Museum offered a fascinating glimpse into Latvia’s coastal heritage. Set amidst a picturesque natural setting, the museum features traditional fishermen’s homesteads and tools, vividly illustrating the daily lives of Jurmala’s past inhabitants. The highlight of the visit was a captivating folk show, where local performers dressed in traditional attire showcased Latvian music and dance. This lively performance provided an authentic taste of the region’s rich cultural traditions and was thoroughly enjoyed by the visitors.

After a delightful lunch at Majorenhoff Restaurant, the group enjoyed some free time at the Via Jurmala Outlet. This modern shopping destination offered a wide range of stores featuring local and international brands, providing an excellent opportunity for the visitors to shop for souvenirs, fashion, and unique Latvian products. The relaxed atmosphere and diverse selection of shops made for an enjoyable and leisurely afternoon. After their shopping spree, the group returned to the hotel to freshen up before gathering for a delicious dinner, where they shared their experiences and highlights of the day in Jurmala.

Day 4: Sigulda

The day began with a visit to Turaida Castle, a symbol of medieval Latvian history. The group explored the castle’s towers and gardens, learning about its historical significance and the legends associated with it.

Next, the group visited Gutmanis Cave, the largest cave in the Baltic region, known for its ancient inscriptions and mythological stories. This was followed by a drive to Kungu Rija, where the group enjoyed a traditional Latvian lunch in a rustic setting.

The highlight of the day was the visit to the Sigulda bobsleigh track. The visitors experienced the thrill of the bobsleigh, gaining insight into Latvia’s strong presence in winter sports. The adventurous day concluded with a return trip to Riga, filled with stories of history and excitement.

Gala Dinner

The Latvian adventure was crowned with a grand gala dinner, a fitting celebration of their memorable journey. The evening began with a warm welcome and a festive atmosphere. The gala dinner featured a sumptuous multi-course Indian meal. Beautifully decorated tables and music added to the ambiance, creating a sophisticated and joyous setting.

Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed heartfelt speeches, expressing gratitude and sharing highlights from their visit. Special guest visits, including airBaltic representative and CEO of Baltic Travel Group provided entertainment and cultural enrichment. The gala dinner was not only a culinary feast but also a celebration of new friendships and shared experiences, making it a highlight of the trip.

Day 5: Free time in Riga

On the last day of their Latvian adventure, the group was granted the freedom to roam and discover the enchanting city of Riga at their leisure.

Some members of the group chose to delve deeper into Riga’s rich history by visiting iconic landmarks such as the majestic Riga Cathedral, the imposing Freedom Monument, and the awe-inspiring Art Nouveau architecture. Others wandered through charming parks, strolled along the scenic Daugava River, or immersed themselves in the city’s thriving arts and culinary scenes.

As the sun began to set on their final day in Riga, the group gathered one last time to reflect on their unforgettable journey and bid farewell to this captivating Baltic gem. With hearts full of memories and spirits enriched by their time in Latvia, they departed with a profound appreciation for the beauty, history, and hospitality that Riga had bestowed upon them.
