In October 2024, Baltic Travel Group proudly supported an initiative that brought joy, healing, and musical development to young talents from Ukraine. From October 4 to 15, the Osokina Freedom Festival team, led by renowned pianist Andrejs Osokins, organized a unique music camp in Riga for children from war-affected regions in Ukraine. This special program provided 20 young musicians with an enriching and supportive environment to refine their musical skills, experience Latvian culture, and briefly escape the impact of war.
A Safe Space for Talent and Growth
These 20 children, aged 12 to 16, came from seven music schools across Chernihiv, Ukraine. In Latvia, they participated in nearly two weeks of intensive music training with masterclasses guided by prominent Latvian and Ukrainian music educators. The sessions were held at the Pāvuls Jurjāns Riga Music School and supported by instructors from other prestigious institutions, including the Emīls Dārziņš Music School and the Ulbroka School of Music and Arts. Each child had the opportunity to work individually with teachers, building on their piano, violin, saxophone, bandura, and other instrumental skills, and learning new performance techniques.
The workshops not only allowed them to develop as musicians but also provided a therapeutic outlet—a chance to refocus and engage in activities that nurtured their emotional well-being.
Experiencing Latvia’s Rich Cultural Heritage
Beyond music lessons, the children participated in an exciting cultural program, exploring the beauty and heritage of Latvia. Excursions, activities, and local attractions gave the young musicians a firsthand experience of Latvian culture, fostering a spirit of international friendship and connection.
Showcasing New Skills and Gaining Stage Confidence
The camp culminated in two special concerts, allowing participants to experience the thrill of live performance. The children were joined by peers from Latvia who also performed, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and shared passion for music. For the final concert, each student presented a piece they had refined during the masterclasses, gaining invaluable stage experience and confidence.
A unique highlight of these concerts was a tribute to Ukrainian guests, with a moving selection of Latvian piano compositions performed by Andrejs Osokins. His rendition served as a touching gesture of solidarity, bringing together Latvian and Ukrainian cultural expressions in one shared musical moment.
A Collective Effort for a Greater Cause
This music camp was made possible through the combined efforts of multiple partners and supporters, including Ziedot.lv, the Pāvuls Jurjāns Riga Music School, the Latvian Ministry of Finance, and the Norwegian Embassy. Their support ensured a memorable experience for all, filled with activities, surprises, and treats for the young musicians.
Baltic Travel Group is honored to have been part of this heartfelt initiative, which showcased the transformative power of music, provided young talents with tools to flourish, and gave them a chance to enjoy a safe, joyful, and inspiring environment.
We thank everyone who contributed to making this program a success, helping create lasting memories and enriching these young musicians’ lives. This camp embodied the essence of unity, hope, and healing—a reminder of how powerful cultural exchange and community support can be.
