The capital, Minsk, was completely rebuilt along Stalinist lines after World War II, but despite its monotonously heroic architecture, it is a lively commercial city with a long tradition of cultural excellence - the ballet is particularly strong. Brest, a potentially thriving trade centre, is famous for its ruined fortress, while in Grodno, on the rail route between Vilnius and Warsaw, there are some splendid baroque churches.
